The human population is rapidly increasing. According to the UN, it may reach 9.7 billion by 2050, which is expected to increase food demand between 59 to 98%. As a result, agricultural markets will be impacted in ways we haven’t seen before. Farmers will have to increase agricultural land or enhance productivity, which still may not be quick enough to meet the forecasted demand for food. Climate change-driven water shortages, increasing global temperatures and extreme weather changes will also have a major effect on food production.

How Millennials are Changing the Procurement Landscape
According to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates, millennials will become the nation’s largest living adult generation this year. Pew Research Center has estimated that millennials are now the largest generation in the U.S. labor force, surpassing both Gen Xers and Baby Boomers. In 2017, millennials constituted 35% of the U.S. labor force, while Gen Xers accounted for 33% and Baby Boomers represented 25%.

Aligning with Microsoft’s overall mission to “Empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more,” and the company’s long-term commitment to carbon neutrality, (since 2012), Microsoft’s Responsible Sourcing team recognized a gap in its own, and hence Purchasers as a whole, ability to accurately measure the CO2 footprint of a global supply chain.

Tell us about your career path. How did you get into this field? Was it purposeful or by accident?   

It was definitely by accident. I took an entry-level job out of college in the Administrative Services department at Thomas Cook Travelers Cheques.  It was a support role to the VP of Facilities and Purchasing.  During my interview, I asked him what I would do when I was finished buying?   Somehow, I still got the job and the rest is history.
