Artificial Intelligence (AI), is a much used and abused term, potentially at the top of its hype cycle.  In one of her recent speeches Theresa May identified AI as a major growth area for British businesses and Juniper research estimated that AI will save businesses $8 billion a year by 2020. AI is predicted to disrupt business and procurement over the next five years through the use of robotic process automation, machine learning and cognitive procurement.

My early career was in application/systems development (aka “programming”), but the company quickly learned that I not only was technical, but could also give presentations and was comfortable in customer-facing situations. I moved into pre-sales support and then into a role as a product manager, where one of my responsibilities was negotiating contracts with application partners.

On December 1, leaders from China and the U.S. broke bread with their enemies and reached consensus to halt the mutual increase of further tariffs until March 1, 2019. As of now, the total U.S. tariffs applied exclusively to China is at $250 billion, and China answered back with $110 billion worth of tariffs on U.S. goods. The “truce” has prevented the January 1 deadline for most tariffs to increase from the current 10 percent to the established 25 percent.

Not so long ago, Blockbuster (remember them?) and Netflix ran a similar service. In fact, at the turn of the millennium, Blockbuster had the opportunity to purchase Netflix for a lowly $50 million. Blockbuster turned it down in what must rank alongside the country and western community’s response to rock and roll as a passing fad for “most short-sighted decisions of all time.”  Today, Netflix has more than 100 million subscribers worldwide and a revenue of $11.69 billion. Blockbuster, on the other hand, filed for bankruptcy in 2010.
