How did you get into this field – was it purposeful or by accident?

I was involved in several organizations in college. My sorority put on an annual fundraising event that I chaired. I hired a local company to source and produce all the print, promotional items and apparel. They offered me a job. They wanted to infuse the company with younger people and set up an internship program.

Managing tail spend has been a major topic of discussion among sourcing professionals for at least the past two decades. In most companies, external spending has a Pareto-like distribution – the largest 20% of suppliers (by dollar volume) typically account for about 80% of the total external spend. Tail spend is generally defined as the 20% (or so) of the total external spend that is attributable to the smallest 80% of suppliers.

Environmental sustainability has become an important topic among sourcing professionals over the past few years. A recent Google search using the term “sustainable procurement” returned just under 28,000 results, and that included only results for the past year. Searches using the terms “sustainable purchasing” and “sustainable sourcing” produced a similar number of results.
