Rising Star Interview: Zachary Greenberger

How did you get into this field – was it purposeful or by accident?

A bit of both – my career started with a heavy interest in supply chain, and the desire to dive deep into and resolve complex business issues. After my first experience in strategic sourcing, I very intently pivoted to pursue a career with that focus. I felt there was a really unique ability with this type of role to influence critical decisions, develop a wide range of relationships and continuously expand my business knowledge.

Innovations in Sourcing: Hilton Supply Management

Can you outline why your team embarked on this project and the problem that needed to be solved?

Supply chain management can be a game changer for a business’s bottom line. Companies are demanding more out of their supply chain, and procurement divisions need to keep up. At a minimum, smart procurement solutions can dramatically cut costs, but they can also drive innovation. Hilton Supply Management is a living example of that.

Soft Skills Make a Real Impact in Supply Chain Management
For what seems like decades now, the conversations around procurement and supply chain management have focused on the themes of innovation and evolution. The function, conventional wisdom suggests, is changing quickly and gaining a new, more prominent position within organizations. You wouldn’t know it to look at job listings. Conduct a quick search and you’ll find that the same skills that powered procurement through years of tactical obscurity are still (apparently) in high demand.

Avery Dennison recognizes that its environmental and social impacts extend beyond its own walls. Led by Mitch Butier, President and CEO, Avery Dennison sets high standards and goals for responsible purchasing practices as part of its overall sustainability vision. Its business philosophy originally started with “first, do no harm,” but then quickly evolved to “become a force for good.”

The Rise of the Ethical Consumer and Why Businesses Need to Follow

The human population is rapidly increasing. According to the UN, it may reach 9.7 billion by 2050, which is expected to increase food demand between 59 to 98%. As a result, agricultural markets will be impacted in ways we haven’t seen before. Farmers will have to increase agricultural land or enhance productivity, which still may not be quick enough to meet the forecasted demand for food. Climate change-driven water shortages, increasing global temperatures and extreme weather changes will also have a major effect on food production.

Tell us about your career path. How did you get into this field? Was it purposeful or by accident?

It was definitely by accident. I took an entry-level job out of college in the Administrative Services department at Thomas Cook Travelers Cheques.  It was a support role to the VP of Facilities and Purchasing.  During my interview, I asked him what I would do when I was finished buying?   Somehow, I still got the job and the rest is history.

I recently met with a senior supply chain leader who, fresh off a redeye flight from Asia, faced a day of meetings that he barely participated in because of interruptions. Not a meeting went by without a call about a supplier “meltdown” in the region he’d just left.  This situation was all too familiar to him. “I’m just tired,” he told me.

Introducing...Women in Global Sourcing

I have a passion for style and design. I like handbags, stilettos and lipstick so much that before I stumbled on sourcing during my senior year of college I planned on a career in fashion. I had recently finished my Alpha Gamma Delta sorority presidency and volunteered to coordinate Lip Jam, our largest fundraiser of the year benefiting diabetes. I hired a local print management company to source all the print, apparel and promotional items for the event. Out of nowhere, they offered me a job. I’m sure it was my charming personality and drop-dead good looks.

Addressing Ethical Supply Chains One Step at a Time – From Intent to Action

This month, the U.K. government alongside the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, raised the bar for companies “to conduct appropriate due diligence in their supply chains to identify, prevent and mitigate human trafficking” to remediate modern slavery. It is no longer enough to just be aware and acknowledge that companies expect every supplier to sign a code of conduct – companies also need to demonstrate the action and the impact.

This is where the rubber meets the road.
