After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SIG CEO and President Dawn Tiura announces the return of the Future of Sourcing Awards.

A recent article reported that the COVID-19 pandemic has “affected the entire purchasing and supply chain management process.” As a result, we constantly face “multiple problems," including "supply shortages, material price increases, logistics challenges, unavailability of containers and timely vessel connections, congestion at ports, and delivery delays that significantly impact supplier performance.”

How did you get into this field – was it purposeful or by accident?

Quite by accident. In 1985 a long standing customer approached us to find resources to maintain one of their legacy applications. Through the course of discussion about resource and annual costs we jointly reached the conclusion that finding foreign resources might be a solution.  After deliberations, bid proposals, visitations and indepth reviews it was concluded to offshore the application to Calcutta.

Can you outline why your team embarked on this project and the problem that needed to be solved?

Our Procurement team took over the process to identify vendor inherent risk from our Third Party Risk Management (TPRM) group. The process we acquired was driven by email and shared drive folders. We were receiving an average of 70 emails per week, and this manual, high volume process was ripe for human error.

How did you get into this field – was it purposeful or by accident?

At Goodyear, my first engineering manager was promoted into the Global Purchasing organization. Within a short period of time he gave me the opportunity to join his team as a buyer where I became hooked on procurement, negotiations and sourcing and I have never left the profession.

In what ways do you hope to influence or transform the industry?

How did you get into this field – was it purposeful or by accident?

I fell into this field by chance. I studied Industrial Engineering at Georgia Tech, and a couple of years into my degree, I found my interest in management consulting. I interviewed at different consultancies with a variety of specialties, looking for one that seemed like the right fit. After my interview at ProcureAbility, I knew I found the right organization, and they specialized in the procurement space.
