Innovations in Sourcing: Microsoft & CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project)

Posted: 08/06/2019 - 04:24

Can you outline why your team embarked on this project and the problem that needed to be solved?

Aligning with Microsoft’s overall mission to “Empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more,” and the company’s long-term commitment to carbon neutrality, (since 2012), Microsoft’s Responsible Sourcing team recognized a gap in its own, and hence Purchasers as a whole, ability to accurately measure the CO2 footprint of a global supply chain.

Tell us about your career path. How did you get into this field? Was it purposeful or by accident?

It was definitely by accident. I took an entry-level job out of college in the Administrative Services department at Thomas Cook Travelers Cheques.  It was a support role to the VP of Facilities and Purchasing.  During my interview, I asked him what I would do when I was finished buying?   Somehow, I still got the job and the rest is history.

Whether you read the news on purpose or stumble upon headlines inadvertently, it is tough to miss the stream of stories related to the impacts of climate change. For me, experiencing the California wildfires of 2018 as a new Bay Area resident was an eye-opening period. The call to action could not have been louder.

My early career was in application/systems development (aka “programming”), but the company quickly learned that I not only was technical, but could also give presentations and was comfortable in customer-facing situations. I moved into pre-sales support and then into a role as a product manager, where one of my responsibilities was negotiating contracts with application partners.

I’ve been very fortunate to have a truly satisfying and rewarding career. My work is intellectually stimulating, relies on a broad range of expertise, experience, and skills, and signed me up for lifelong learning. When I found this profession, I found my passion …. and never looked back.

Savings rationalization: What would you sacrifice to maximize savings?

As we move through the holiday season, competition of all sorts is becoming prevalent. Big department stores and smaller retail chains all have their special deals in place and offer a variety of products and solutions to meet spikes in customer demand while racking in the big dollars. They promote discounts and incentives on brand-name products while other shops offer a more generic version of the same items at less than half the price. Consumers are left with a big decision.
