Now is the time for business leaders to prioritize shared services innovation, rethink their operating model and fully harness the capabilities of emerging technologies. Those that do will reap the benefits; those that do not risk falling further behind their better-placed competitors.

Outsourcing has become synonymous with cheap services offered by another country. Lower costs are on everyone’s mind when outsourcing is mentioned, especially in the IT world, where it can make a substantial difference. However, it’s not just about saving a buck. Outsourcing can also help companies find the right talent (and enough of it), reduce overhead and in the end, yes, reduce costs.

Based on the speed with which the world is adopting and embracing new technology, we could easily have 500,000 IT roles to fill by 2020. For companies around the world, building new products to compete (and win) against competitors is hard, and the game is only getting tougher. Talent is difficult to find and even harder to retain. If you’re not using innovative technology, you’ll undoubtedly struggle in the war for IT talent.

Cloud computing has impacted IT in many ways, including (not the least of which) security. One decade ago, in a less “cloudy” world, an enterprise would either manage IT itself or delegate much of it to a large consulting or IT services firm. Either way, one or two persons (the CIO and/or outsourcing firm’s lead) would take charge of security, which typically involved setting up barriers to internal resources.

In the last few years, with the growing hype around automation, artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics, there has been a feverish pace of activities in the IT outsourcing space on both sides of the table from enterprises and service providers. There’s also action happening in the middle of the table with the product vendors and on the outskirts with the analysts and industry commentators.
